Abstract

The polluting of marine ecosystems with plastics is both a global and a local problem with potentially severe consequences for wildlife, economic activity, and human health. It is a problem that originates in countries’ inability to adequately manage the growing flow of waste. We use an impact pathway framework to trace the flow of plastics through the socio-ecological system and identify the role of specific policy instruments in achieving behavioral changes to reduce marine plastic waste. We produce a toolbox for finding a policy that is suitable for different countries. We use the impact pathway and toolbox to make country-specific recommendations that reflect the reality in each of the selected countries.

Cet article liste de manière catégorisé le principales actions envisageables pour réduire la pollution plastique dans les pays émergeants. Cette étude a été financée par le « Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency to the Environment for Development ». Il couvre plusieurs pays de l’Asie du Sud-Est, y compris la Chine qui n’est plus dans cette catégorie. Le point clef reste tout de même l’intégration du modèle d’hyperconsommation occidental qui est totalement inadapté aux habitudes et aux capacités de ces pays en matière de gestion des déchets. Il l’est déjà dans les pays dits « riches » où la gestion de la pollution plastique est loin d’être finalisée car la partie recyclage reposait beaucoup sur le transport des déchets collectés vers les pays émergents. Pour rester positif, faisons déjà le ménage chez nous et laissons à ces pays la liberté d’organiser des modèles économiques compatibles avec leurs infrastructures et leurs envies.
