Prevention, detection, and management of water and foodborne risks is essential, and can directly impact several of the Sustainable Development Goals—not only through improving food security and nutrition (goal 2), fostering good health and wellbeing (goal 3), but also encouraging responsible consumption and production (goal 12). Awareness of food safety issues is only the first step; considerable and concerted efforts need to be made by producers, governments, regulatory agencies, and consumers to ensure that the food we eat is safe. As manifested in the theme for the inaugural World Food Safety day, food safety really is everyone’s business.
