SRI LANKA: A big rally to fight against plastic pollution

To celebrate its 71st anniversary, the Sri Lanka Navy organized a large-scale event to raise awareness about plastic pollution, which is suffocating the country. A dozen associations, including The SeaCleaners, participated in several simultaneous operations on the island.

This is the second time we have been invited to join a cleanup in Sri Lanka, after having tackled the beach of Prithipura a few kilometers from Colombo. On December 19th, and in order to commemorate its 71st anniversary, the Sri Lanka Navy set up a series of events to fight against plastic pollution. Armed with gloves and garbage bags, participants combed the beaches and collected an impressive amount of plastic waste: packaging, glass and plastic bottles, plastic bags…

Volunteers also tackled the source of the problem by cleaning the Hamilton Channel, a 5km radius from the Kelani River to the Negombo lagoon, to prevent plastic waste carried by the rivers from causing significant damage to the marine ecosystem by entering the ocean.

Thank you to our wonderful local collaborators at OceanLust Magazine for allowing us to participate in such joint efforts, over 9000 km from our headquarters.
